Many dogs in India eat from the family plate. Most home food is fine in small amounts, but some everyday kitchen items can make a dog seriously ill. Here are the 9 to keep away from your dog.
In short: no grapes or raisins, no chocolate, no onion or garlic, and no sugar-free sweets. If your dog eats any of these, call your vet straight away.
The 9 dangerous foods
- Grapes and raisins (kishmish) – can cause sudden kidney failure, even in small amounts.
- Chocolate – contains theobromine, which affects the heart and nerves. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous.
- Onion and garlic – raw, cooked or powdered, they damage red blood cells. Watch out for gravies, curries and leftover sabzi.
- Xylitol – a sweetener in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters and sweets. It can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar.
- Cooked bones – they splinter and can block or tear the gut.
- Spicy and oily food – chilli and heavy oil commonly cause vomiting, diarrhoea and pancreatitis.
- Mithai and sweets – high in sugar and fat, and some contain raisins, xylitol or chocolate.
- Tea and coffee – caffeine affects the heart.
- Alcohol – even small amounts are toxic to dogs.
What to do if your dog eats one
Call or visit your vet right away. Don't wait for symptoms to appear, and don't try to make your dog vomit without a vet's advice.
